How We Choose Gifts

A gift guide is only useful if you can see why each item is on it. This page sets out the method behind every list on vinymart.com.

1. We start with the person

Each guide begins with a recipient and an occasion: a father at Christmas, a child of six, a host at Halloween. We ask how that person actually spends their time, and look for objects that fit habits they already have. Gifts that require someone to take up a new hobby are the ones most often left unused.

2. The three tests

3. How we research

We compare the options available, read manufacturers’ specifications and safety information, and study what buyers report after months of use rather than on the day of delivery. For children’s products we check the age grade and the relevant safety points, such as small parts, magnets and batteries.

We are not a testing laboratory and we do not claim hands-on testing unless a guide says so explicitly.

4. What goes into each recommendation

We give price ranges rather than exact prices because prices change daily. The retailer’s page shows the current one.

5. Independence

Some links are affiliate links, which means a retailer may pay us a commission if you buy. Gifts are selected first and links are added afterwards. Nobody can pay to be included or to be ranked higher. See the affiliate disclosure.

6. Keeping guides current

Every guide carries the date of its last update. Seasonal guides are reviewed before each season, and items are replaced when they are discontinued, decline in quality or are overtaken by something better.

Questions about a recommendation

If you think a pick is wrong or out of date, let us know. Reader corrections improve the guides.
