Hosts tend to overbuy decorations and underplan the two things guests actually notice: the light in the room and where the food and drink are. Get those right and a handful of well-chosen pieces does the rest.
Everything on this list was chosen to come out of the cupboard again next October. A party kit that lasts ten years costs far less than one bought new each time, and it stores in a single box.
How we chose
Each item had to be reusable, easy to store and useful for hosting rather than only for display. Where a piece touches food or sits near costumes and children, the note on what to check covers the safety point. More on how we choose.
Price guide: $ is under $25, $$ is $25 to $75, $$$ is over $75.

- Lighting first. Turn off overhead lights and use string lights and LED candles. It changes the room more than anything else.
- One drinks station, one food table. Place them apart so guests move around the room.
- Three dressed spots. Entrance, drinks and food. Concentrated decoration looks better than props spread thinly through the house.
- Clear the floor. Costumes and low light make cables and loose rugs a real hazard.

Common questions
What do I really need for a Halloween party?
Drinks, a few easy snacks, low warm lighting and one or two strong decorations near the entrance. Guests remember the atmosphere, not the number of props.
How early should I order Halloween decorations?
As early in October as you can. The most popular pieces sell out in the second half of the month, and delivery times lengthen as the date approaches.
Which Halloween party items are worth spending more on?
Anything you will reuse every year: flameless candles, a wooden serving board and a cast iron pot. Save on paper tableware and novelty props, which are used once.
Is a fog machine safe to use indoors?
Yes, if you use water-based fog fluid, run it in short bursts and keep the room ventilated. Keep it away from smoke alarms, which fog can trigger, and out of reach of children because the nozzle gets hot.
